Recently, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) made a surprising announcement, namely that it would appropriate funds for the border wall in order to complete unfinished gaps in the protective barrier that previous President Trump had initiated.
When he entered the White House on January 20, President Biden immediately ceased all construction of the wall, which resulted in enormous sections of the wall being left incomplete, as well as significant construction material remaining unused at the border.
While the DHS funding does not account for adding additional miles to the border wall, it will ostensibly close “small games” that have remained open from previous construction, as well as “remediating incomplete gates.”
The DHS’s decision to provide funding for closing the gaps in the wall emerges as DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas proclaims that he would like to use border funds in order to “protect border communities from physical dangers,” claiming that such dangers resulted “from the previous administration’s approach to border wall construction.”
DHS also indicated that funds for the border wall will be delegated to drainage systems, namely to complete incomplete access roads, discard varied construction materials, and prevent erosion.
DHS intends to commence this work in the El Paso, Yuma, and Tucson border areas, which stretch from Texas to California. In addition, DHS also indicated that it is contemplating additional work in these states.
Rob Portman (R-OH), who serves as the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Ranking Member, noted that the DHS decision represents a “step in the right direction.”
