Breitbart News recently reported on a sizeable methamphetamine bust that took place on the border of Texas and Mexico.

The Rio Grande Valley Sector Customs and Border Protection officers involved in this case searched a tractor-trailer rig at the Pharr International Bridge that links Texas and Mexico.

The CBP officers tasked with patrolling the Pharr International Bridge on August 7 witnessed a tractor-trailer driving towards the cargo terminal for inspection and entry into the United States. The officers instructed the driver, a 29-year-old Mexican national from Reynosa, Tamaulipas, to head towards the secondary inspection area.

Upon inspecting the containers of produce from Mexico, the officers were able to discover 521 packages that were suspected of being filled with drugs. After testing the drugs, the officers determined them to be methamphetamine.

According to the officials’ report, the drugs weighed about 992 pounds and had a total value of $19,841,000.

“This is another significant strike our officers have made on the methamphetamine smuggling industry,” Port of Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas Port Director Carlos Rodriguez declared in a statement. “Large seizures like this one underscore the severity of the drug threat and show that our officers remain fiercely dedicated to upholding our border security mission.”

The officers confiscated the drugs and then proceeded to transfer them and the driver — the Mexican national —over to ICE Homeland Security Investigations special agents to look into the smuggling operation. On top of that, CBP seized the tractor-trailer.

According to Breitbart Texas’ Jaeson Jones research, Mexican cartels are smuggling record amounts of meth across the border. Cartels such as Cartel Jalisco New Generation (CJNG) and the Sinaloa Cartel are behind the bulk of the manufacturing and distribution of the meth.

“As of July 2020, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the ports of entry have seized more than 118,153 pounds of meth, doubling the record year set in 2019,” Jones observed.

Drug smuggling is one of the many problems associated with having loose border controls. The Trump administration must continue is focus on border security. The U.S. cannot afford open border policies that put the country’s social cohesion and public security at risk.
