The mother of 5-year-old Cannon Hinnant, who was shot and killed last weekend while playing outside his home, wants to see her son’s killer sentenced to death.
“I want death penalty, and I’m gonna seek it,” Bonny Waddell told local North Carolina news outlet WRAL on Friday.
Hinnant died last Sunday while he was riding his bicycle in his neighborhood while playing with his sisters. Police said suspect Darius Sessoms ran up to Hinnant and shot him execution-style outside his home. Sessoms has since been charged with first-degree murder, but there has been no explanation for the motive behind the death.
“My baby didn’t deserve this,” Waddell said of her son. “He had the biggest smile, the biggest eyes.”
“This man took my girls when he took my baby. They know that he’s in a better place,” she added of her young daughters witnessing the shooting.
Waddell also said on social media that Sessoms will answer to her personally over her son’s killing.
“This man will answer to me,” Waddell wrote on Facebook last week. “That man will see me and my son through my face! This sorry excuse as a human being will rot in hell.”
Hinnant’s family held his funeral last week, celebrating his short life and calling him a “beautiful kid.”
“He meant the world to me, just like all the other kids that are mine I helped raise,” Hinnant’s stepfather, Lee Parker, said at the funeral.
