Republicans who serve on the House Judiciary Committee are demanding answers from Alejandro Mayorkas, Biden’s pick for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary. This call comes as illegal immigration has surged at the U.S.-Mexico border throughout Biden’s first five months as president, per a letter initially reported by Breitbart.
This letter details how Rep. Tom McClintock (R-CA), an Immigration and Citizenship Subcommittee ranking member, and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), a Judiciary Committee ranking member, have levied significant criticism against the Democrats for their insufficient, inadequate response to Republicans’ growing concerns regarding the border crisis. Consequently, they have demanded for Mayorkas to make an appearance before the Judiciary Committee, given that it is typically customary for the DHS secretary to do so at least once annually, or more should the request arise.
McClintock and Jordan wrote that their letter came about after Democrats’ refusal to provide any response to the current catastrophe at the border, which is why the representatives opted to write to Mayorkas directly. As part of their request, the representatives wish for Mayorkas “to testify at the Committee about the ongoing humanitarian and security crisis at the border.”
This letter emerges while illegal immigration numbers have exploded over the past several months. According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials, it is not uncommon at all to encounter 100,000 illegals attempting to cross the border on a monthly basis since February. Needless to say, this level represents a gargantuan increase over the levels seen in 2020. For instance, data for May 2021 reveals that 180,034 illegals attempted to cross the border, versus only 23,327 in May 2020. Thus, the illegal border crossings skyrocketed 675 percent between May 2020 and May 2021 alone.
This enormous increase in illegal border crossings also happens to coincide with a wide array of modified or entirely new immigration policies promulgated by the Biden administration. These actions include the termination of Trump’s Remain in Mexico policy, the dismantlement of various asylum agreements with North Triangle countries, and the slow reduction of the Title 42 public health policy, which permits border officials to quickly remove illegal immigrants from the United States.
According to McClintock and Jordan, the Biden administration has not only “repealed Trump Administration programs and policies that helped to stem the rising tide of illegal immigration,” but it has also “instituted open-border policies and rhetoric that incentivized aliens to illegally enter the U.S.”
On top of that, Biden’s DHS pick, Mayorkas, has also taken advantage of his position in order to increase the number of opportunities “for poor, government-dependent migrants” to cross into the United States via the U.S.-Mexico border.
The GOP representatives have requested a rapid response from Mayorkas, which should indicate whether or not he is willing to make an appearance at a Judiciary Committee hearing.
In order for Mayorkas to be able to testify, Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY), the committee chair, will need to schedule the hearing. At this point in time, it is unclear whether or not Nadler will do so.
